It is the quickest way to move a value from one system to another, for example when a design file gives you an RGB triple and your code needs hex, or when you want to nudge a shade and find the HSL equivalent. Working in HSL makes it easy to understand a color in terms of its hue, how saturated it is, and how light or dark it is, which is often more intuitive than raw red, green, and blue numbers. Color on the web is described three ways and each one is convenient for a different job. Hexadecimal packs a color into a compact string of six digits, two each for red, green, and blue, which is ideal for stylesheets. RGB expresses the same three channels as numbers from zero to two hundred fifty five, which is what code and image tools usually work in. HSL describes a color instead by hue around a wheel, saturation, and lightness, which is far more intuitive when the question is how a color relates to its neighbours. The practical need is translation, because a design file may specify a value in one system while the codebase expects another, and doing the arithmetic by hand across three channels invites mistakes. HSL earns its place when you want to derive a value rather than copy one, since shifting the hue produces a related color, lowering saturation desaturates it, and adjusting lightness produces a tint or a shade, all with a single number changing.
