UUID Generator

The UUID Generator creates RFC 4122 version 4 universal unique identifiers, the kind of random, roughly collision-free IDs that applications use to label records without a central authority. Enter how many you need and the tool generates each one with the browser crypto RNG, which means the values are unpredictable and not tied to any clock or machine. Use UUIDs for primary keys, correlation IDs, anonymous identifiers, and file names where you want a value that is almost certainly unique without coordinating across services. A universally unique identifier is a 128 bit value that applications use to label records without asking a central service for the next number, and version 4 achieves that by filling almost every bit with randomness. The practical consequence is that you can generate an identifier anywhere, on any machine, at any time, and be confident it will not collide with one generated elsewhere, which is what makes UUIDs attractive in distributed systems. Typical uses are primary keys in a database, correlation identifiers that tie together the logs of one request across several services, anonymous handles that do not reveal anything about the entity, and unique file names that will not overwrite each other. The trade off to keep in mind is that random identifiers are not ordered, so they do not cluster nicely in an index the way a sequential number does, and they are longer on disk and in a URL. Where sortability matters you want a different scheme entirely, which is why the tool focuses on the general purpose version 4 case that covers the large majority of identifier needs.
